In Paris, an American writer named Julia Jarmond lives with her husband Bertrand who is an architect. Bertrand is restoring a block of apartments which is owned by his own family. Julia gets to know about the apartment that her husband’s family has not obtained it through honorable means and the original owners of this apartment are Jews who have forced to sell it in 1942 when Vichy government has arrested more than 13,000 Parisian Jews. In those victims there is Sarah Starzynski who locks her brother in order to protect him in the cupboard in that apartment. Scaring for his brother’s protection, Sarah escapes from cycling stadium. Julia learns Sarah’s story and also gets to know a big deal about this event which has been reluctant to discuss even in France once.
